Running a food business calls for early starts, long days, changing costs, difficult decisions and a steady stream of things that need sorting out. But there are also the moments that make it worthwhile, like a full house, a customer who comes back every week, a great review, a new menu item that takes off, or simply looking around and realising that people are enjoying something you created.
There should be something sweet in it for you too.
That doesn’t have to mean some huge milestone waiting at the end of years of hard work. Often, the rewards of building a business show up in smaller ways along the way: a good month, a problem finally solved, a growing team, more regular customers or finding a new opportunity that makes the business work a little better.
Dessert is actually a pretty good example.
The best things aren’t always the main event
Most customers don’t go out for lunch because they desperately need a brownie afterwards. They don’t necessarily order takeaway because they’ve been thinking about ice cream all day. Dessert is often the extra: something they spot on the menu, see at the counter or decide they have room for after all.
That extra add-on can be valuable for a business.
Adding dessert to an existing order gives customers another way to enjoy what you offer and gives you an opportunity to increase the value of the sale. It doesn’t necessarily require an enormous dessert menu either. A few options that are easy to order, serve and take away can go a long way.
Ice cream, baked treats, individual portions and other grab-and-go desserts can work across cafés, restaurants, bakeries, catering businesses, events and takeaways. The trick is making them easy for customers to add.
Give dessert the space it deserves
As more food is eaten away from the table, dessert also needs to be able to travel. Someone might be taking it back to the office, adding it to a delivery order, buying it for an event or saving it for later.
Good packaging makes those extra sales easier. Ice cream cups and lids, portion cups, dessert boxes and takeaway containers help you serve desserts in ways that suit how your customers actually eat them.
It’s a relatively simple part of the business to explore, especially if you already have something people love.
And perhaps that’s the broader point. Building a food business isn’t only about the big wins. There are plenty of smaller opportunities, good days and satisfying moments along the way that deserve their share of attention too.
After all the work you put in, there should always be room for something sweet!
